Glasgow Airport welcomed aviation enthusiasts and photographers from across Scotland on Saturday (8th August) as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, offering access to a location within the airport grounds that is not normally open to the public.
The special enthusiast day gave guests the opportunity to capture arriving and departing aircraft from a rarely seen vantage point while experiencing a different side of one of Scotland’s principal international gateways.
The event formed part of the airport’s year-long programme marking 60 years since Glasgow Airport officially opened in May 1966.
For six decades, Glasgow Airport has connected Scotland with destinations across the UK and around the world, welcoming millions of passengers and playing a vital role in the country’s connectivity and economy. The anniversary programme celebrates that journey and the people who have been part of it.
Participants spent the day photographing aircraft movements and learning more about airport operations from a part of the airport estate that is typically inaccessible to visitors.
Gavin Birch-Williams, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “Our 60th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on how Glasgow Airport has evolved over the past six decades and to celebrate the role it continues to play in connecting Scotland with the world.”
“As part of those celebrations, we wanted to offer something a little different by giving guests access to a location within the airport grounds that they would not normally have the opportunity to visit. It was a fantastic way to share this milestone year and provide a memorable perspective on life at Glasgow Airport.”
Tommy Donachie, who is the admin of the Glasgow Airport Spotters Group, said: “Thank you to Glasgow Airport for putting on this event and allowing our members to come to the airport as part of the 60th anniversary.”
Douglas Tilly, treasurer of Glasgow Airport Aviation Enthusiasts Club said: “Our club has a long history with the airport and we are delighted we could take part in this day for the 60th anniversary. A big thank you to the staff at the airport.
Harry Campbell, Club Activist of the Glasgow Airport Aviation Enthusiasts Club, added: “Our club has been running since 1967 and started not long after the airport moved to its current location. We have a wealth of knowledge about the airport and would encourage anyone who wants to know more to get in touch and come have a look at what we have to offer.”
